Make Bootable USB from ISO Mac for PC Ubuntu: Learn the Best Tools and Techniques



I tried doing a bootable usb on Mac with the terminal commands and after it copied and ejected, the usb disappeared completely. It does not appear as bootable device, it does not appear in the disk utility app. Also I am beginner at working with terminal, but from what I can see, the stick as I know it (16gb) does not appear either.[IMG] [/IMG]Any clues?


I have downloaded the ubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso. How do I create a bootable Ubuntu USB stick using my Macbook Air which is running OS X 10.10.2? I cannot create a bootable CD, since the Air is designed without the optical drive.

If you get an Unsupported ISO message, the ISO you chose isn't supported for burning to USB by Rufus. In this case, try one of the other programs listed in Step 1 or check with the maker of the ISO image for more help getting their software to work from a USB drive.

EXPERIMENTAL - Software will try to detect if ISO image is bootable and if so write appropriate bootloader. As of release only booting through UEFI seems to be working. Tested with Windows 10 ISO, Linux (Porteus-5.0rc, Ubuntu-19.04 and Mint 19.2 ISO images). NOT ALL ISO IMAGES WILL WORK. This functionality is experimental and may be removed from software at any time.

Linux distributions running GNOME can easily make a live CD through nautilus and gnome-disk-utility. Simply right-click on the .iso file, and select Open With Disk Image Writer. When GNOME Disk Utility opens, specify the flash drive from the Destination drop-down menu and click Start Restoring.


Syslinux files for BIOS systems are already copied to /mnt/syslinux. Unmount the FAT file system, install the syslinux and mtools packages and run the following commands to make the partition bootable:


This method uses Syslinux and a Ramdisk (MEMDISK) to load the entire Arch Linux ISO image into RAM. Since this will be running entirely from system memory, you will need to make sure the system you will be installing this on has an adequate amount. A minimum amount of RAM between 500 MB and 1 GB should suffice for a MEMDISK based, Arch Linux install.
